When an egg is soaked in water for 24 hours, it undergoes a process called osmosis. Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane. In this case, the water molecules move from the outside of the egg (the water) to the inside of the egg (the egg white and yolk) in order to equalize the concentration of solutes. As a result, the egg absorbs water and swells slightly. However, the eggshell is impermeable to water, so it remains intact. This experiment is often used to demonstrate osmosis in biology classes [1].
